Introduction

In a blog dedicated to the truth about Macedonia, it is crucial to talk about the Slavs. Who are the Slavs then?  Roughly speaking, the Slavs are a group of people who arrived in Europe somewhere between the 5th and 6th century AD, and settled throughout most of Europe. Today, the entirety of Eastern and Central Europe for the most part, are Slavic countries. Macedonia is categorized in the so-called South Slavic Group.

Now then, reading this, one would wonder at my choice of title – the Slavs clearly exist, so how are they “people of the fantastic imagination?” Because, the aforementioned categorization is coming from the official narrative and is simply not true. Slavs as a people, in the sense of an ethnos do not exist. There is no such thing as a Slavic tribe, and with this blog I will prove it.

Many historians throughout the ages have wrestled with the point of origins of the “Slavs”. Some placed them in the marshes of eastern Poland, some in the forests of Ukraine etc … they always looked to the East, because allegedly that is the direction from where they were supposed to have arrived. That’s why today the mainstream theory goes that they originated somewhere behind the Carpathian mountain range, and this has become the general and official consensus.

If only these people bothered to look a bit further down south, they would discover the true origins of the so-called “Slavs”, and that is the Balkans. The reason why they don’t do this is simple: They do not believe that the language and culture could have diffused from south to north, because “Slavic” did not exist there prior to the alleged arrival, and therefore it is impossible.

But the narratives and chronicles tell a different story. I have shown so far that the Macedonian language of today is almost exactly the same as the one in antiquity, and I have shown how it has risen from the Pelasgian – as well as other languages, which will prove the claims of the chronicles that the settlements happened from south to north, and that what is considered a virgin arrival of the “Slavs” is simply a resettlement of these displaced peoples.

Let us start from the beginning. It is known that various tribes can appear under different names throughout history, like the Germanic Teutons who later became known as …  for example. This is true for the “Slavs” as well. The fact that they first appear as “Sklavenoi” in 6th century AD writings, does not disqualify them as ancient, it simply means that that is the first ever recorded Romeian imperial record of them. They haven’t been noted before because they had been living on the fringes of the Eastern Roman Empire for centuries. As Romanian historian Florin Kurta rightly points out, “ not that they came from the north, but that they became Sclavenoi (Slavs) the moment they came into contact with the Roman Empire”.

What is the term Sklavenoi then? It is simply a Romeian rendering of the term “Slovene” which these people used to describe themselves. Romeians adapted it with their phonetics: Sl-Skl- (since “Greek” had trouble with initial sl- clusters). That’s why Σκλαβηνοί looks “Greek-shaped” but is really their attempt to say Slovene. It is important to note that the administrative term Sklavinia is derived from the appellation of the people, and not the other way around, which means that the “Slavs”, that is the Veneti, came first. Some people mix this up, and so assume that the Sklavenoi are simply people of the enclaves.

What does Slovene mean then? Slovene is a Macedonic verb meaning “to talk”, in modern Macedonian it is “slovenje”, though this is archaic and it has been replaced with “govorenje” or “zboruvanje” instead. Slovene stems from the noun “slovo” which means “word”, so literally, the Slavs, the  Sloveni, are people who “slovat”, “use the word”, that is they can talk, they are literate. This reveals to us then, that Sloveni is but a descriptor, an appellation, and not an ethnonym. This fact will be later on twisted and abused in order to construct a fake ethnicity for political gains. I will look at this later.

The Question of Antiquity

Good, with that out of the way for now, we can now focus on the next problem: how do we know that they are ancient and not simply “old” people. In order to find ancient roots for themselves, Soviet historians, and those from the Balkans have claimed kinship to the Veneti, an ancient tribe first mentioned by Roman historian Tacitus in the 1st century AD. The historians’ main argument comes from language, and the foundation of their argument is a line from Jordanes, a 6th century Byzantine chronicle of Gothic origins. Jordanes is one of the few contemporary historians writing on the Slavs, and he mentions them in his work “De Gesta Actibusque Getarum” or shortly called “Getica”, that is, “The Deeds and Acts of the Goths.”

Writing in this work, he claims that north of Danube live people who are called variously Sklavenoi, Veneti and Antes, and that they share the same language and customs. Not only historians of the past century – and modern ones – but also those of past centuries have taken this as a crucial proof for their argument, that the Veneti are ancestors of the “Slavs.”

Now we will test the waters, and see if this claim holds true.

If the Pelasgians, as we have proved so far, are the true ancestors of the “Slavs”, or the “proto-Slavs”,  then that would mean that the Veneti, as other, more recent ancestors are of Pelasgian stock. For this to be true, they would have to be found on the Balkans, and we do find them, first mentioned by Herodotus under the name Enetoi, living south of Epirus,. We also find them in Asia Minor as part of Paphlagonia. So, the first claim checks out.

The Western Link:

Italy

The Pelasgians have spread far and wide, bringing their language and culture with them. That should hold true for the Veneti as well – let’s find out.

The Veneti are further found in northern Italy, Central Europe (Modern day Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, id est in the alpine regions) Eastern Europe, Western, and Northwestern Europe (East Germany, Scandinavia).  Everywhere where the Veneti are said to live, we later find the so-called Sklavenoi.

In the alpine region, geographers like Strabo locate the Raeti/Veneti and in the lower regions of Italy, the Etruscans. For the Etruscans it is said to be of Pelasgian stock.  These two peoples shared a same language and same writing system. Slovenian linguists Ivan Tomasic, Joshko Shavli and Matej Bor found proof linking western Slovenian dialects with Etruscan/Venetic.

Here are some words for illustration:

Domo = Dom; hence also the Latin “domus” (Home).

Ala = vital, vigorous (Etruscan) – Ala/ Lamija = dragon (archaic, and only found in Macedonian). Probably it came to denote this creature since it is very large and vigorous.

Burrus = a drinking cup – Bure = barrel.

Nae – Znae = knows.

The name of the god Vanth is the same as the Serbo-Croatian “vani”, “outside”, but also to the eastern Macedonian “vonka”.

In Northern Italy, to this day, an old dialect of Italian, closely related to the Aegean Macedonian dialect is spoken. In his book, “History of the Macedonian Peoples”, Odisej Belchev  writes how an acquaintance of his, upon a trip to one of the villages there discovered locals speaking this dialect. It was so similar, that the acquaintance expected the family to be Macedonians. These are the Friulian and Ladin dialects, spoken near the border with Slovenia. Though today their vocabulary is mostly Latin, they have retained their Rhaetian phonology – they use consonant clusters cj/gj/gn which correspond to Macedonian consonants ќ/kj ѓ/gj њ/nj  but gn is read as nj like in Spanish “manjana”.

Example: cjasa = kukja = house.

Gjat (Cat) –  Gjerdan (necklace).

Germany and Eastern Europe

In Eastern Germany, the Veneti were called Windi, and the people living there – from Lubeck to the northeast ,to lake Constance on the border with Austria – have been identified as Windi by German chroniclers. These are the “Slavic” tribes of Luteci, Obodrites, Redarii etc … the Polabian and Sorbian languages of the people still living there are until today called Windish.

Here are some words here also for illustration

Bratr = Brat, Brother

Woko = Oko, Eye

Hlawa = Glava, Head

We can also find the Windi in Scandinavia as well.

In Eastern Europe we find the Veneti living near Finland, in the Baltic. Casimirus Szulc an 18th century German-Polish scholar writes that they were called Vani by the Fins and the Scandinavians, and their homeland, European Scythia, was known as Vanoma. These are the Vanir of Nordic myth, the foreign gods, hence Vani = “those on the outside”, “foreigners”.

This follows the same logic as the god Vanth. Vanth was the god of winds who took spirits to the afterlife, hence to the outside (of the living world).   Vani (noun) => Vanth = > Vanir.

The Finnish gulf between Finland and Estonia was called Venetic gulf. It is claimed by modern historians that we simply do not know who exactly were these Veneti living here, or whether they have anything to do with the Adriatic Veneti. However if it is known that the Baltic languages, namely Latvian and Lithuanian (not Estonian because it is Finno-Ugric) come from the same family as “Slavic”, from this follows that the Latvi and Lietvi are these Veneti, id est Vani.  Even though the split is claimed to have occurred deep in prehistory, even to-day there are remarkable similarities, even sameness between the two languages. There was a Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth after all. How would that be possible if the population spoke a different language or held different customs.

Spain and Central Europe

There was a Sklavonia as far as Spain, in the region between Andalusia and Murcia. The Spaniards claimed mythical descent from Hercules, like the Macedonians. In the Primera Chronica General, or “The General Chronicle of Spain”, commissioned by King Alfonso X it is written that Liberta, the daughter of the mythical king Espan, nephew of Hercules, married Pirus, that is Pir (Пир), a mythical Macedonian king who gave his name to the Epirus region and the Pyrenees mountain range. Their seat was Cadiz, one of the oldest cities in Western Europe in general, which is located exactly in Andalusia.

Now for Central Europe it can be said that, what is identified as Celtic is actually Venetic, as the Veneti have often times been confused with the Celts. Case in point is the tribe Vindelici who are claimed to have been Celtic, but it is most obvious that their name is derived from Vindi/Wendi.

Let us also not forget the Peloponnesian Sklavonia around Arcadia, the supposed place of origins of the Pelasgians, which was discussed in my previous post.

In summary, we have proven that everywhere where “Slavs” have been said to live, we find the Veneti prior, thus proving that Veneti = Sloveni.

Counterarguments from Academia

Can this be purely ascribed to a massive wave of “Slavs” who flooded Europe from the north, and displaced the local population? That is what official academia would have us believe, but the answer is no. There is absolutely zero archaeological evidence to support a massive onslaught of “Slavs” that either slaughtered or assimilated the local European population. Were there settlements? Yes, there were; was it massive enough, no.

Florin Kurta, in his revolutionary book I would say, “The Creation of the Slavs” downright rejects the foolishness of a mass Slavic migration, and proves that there cannot be such a thing. By examining archaeological and written sources, Kurta concludes that there are severe discrepancies between what is said, and the reality on the ground.

For example, Byzantine military treatises speak of massive plundering of these “barbarous Slavs” who cross the Danube, seize what they can, burning and killing in the process, and go back north of the Danube with a massive booty. Not one find has been found to substantiate this. Not enough artefacts from the south have been found up north, and vice versa. In fact broch styles for instance, show remarkable similarities. Even the architectural shift is not as drastic as one might expect, which disproves the overblown, Byzantine narratives of masses of “barbarians” flooding Eastern Europe.

 Italian scholar Mario Alinei, who has established the Continuation Paradigm, and who argues for a continual development of European peoples, also rejects the ridiculous Carpathian theory, on the grounds of the remarkable continuity of archaeology in the Balkans since the Neolithic. He therefore rightly concludes that the South-Slavic branch must be considered the oldest of all the branches, and out of which all the other branches originated.

But these scholars are not treated seriously, they are considered as delusional and are thrown to the side, no not even the side, but in the dustbin entirely, because what they claim effectively defeats the official narrative.

The Invention of the Slav as an Ethnonym

So, in retrospect, what do these finds tell us? That the so-called “Slavs” have always existed on European soil, only under different names, namely Pelasgians at first, then Veneti and Antes. “Slavs” or Sklavenoi only appears in the 6th century AD. This means that the Slavs as a people are a Byzantine invention which is abused today in order to downplay the antiquity of said people and present them as novel. As I have mentioned before, this is done out of political and imperialistic motivations, where the Western mainstream academia takes this fact out of context in order to deceive the world, including the “Slavs” themselves that they are newly arrived barbarians, and thus deprive them of their ancient past and continuity.  If the Veneti are first attested around the time of Caesar, that would make the modern day Slavs at least two thousand years old, a staggering difference of some six hundred and plus years than what is purported. Add to that the Pelasgians and the difference increases that much more.

Thus we have proven a continuity that flows like this: Pelasgians => Veneti => Sloveni. We have proved that the Veneti are indeed the northern and western branch of the Balkan Pelasgians, and in fact, the “Slavs” have been present north of the Danube way before they were known as Veneti, as integral part of European Scythia. We will discuss Scythia in detail in another post.

We have proven, in part so far, that with their presence in various parts of Europe, the “Slavs” have always been neighbours to, and have coexisted with other major European groups such as the Celts and the Germans since antiquity. This connection goes deeper than simple neighbourhood with some of the tribes and will be explored at a later time.

The invention of the Slavs as a nation, as an ethnos, is concocted by Moscow, around the 15th century, after the fall of Constantinople. With the city under Ottoman rule, Moscow pretended to the title of “Third Rome”. Prince Ivan III married Sofia Palaeologus, the daughter of Constantine IX Palaeologus, the last Christian emperor of Romea, and thus secured his rights over the Eastern Roman Empire. Next, they needed to grab the subjects for themselves, and so with the help of the Eastern Church, now called Pravoslavna, Orthodox, literally meaning, “right/correct worshipping”, the Christian peoples of the former Romean empire became “pravoslavni”, and hence we get the adjective “Slavyani”. Slavyani was then equated to Slovene, and thus the ethnonym was born. The greedy Western imperialists readily embraced this ideology with open arms, because now they could relegate the people of antiquity from Western Europe to a measly bog infested homeland to the east.

From Slavyani we get the later English term Slav, which is erroneously, and intentionally interpreted as coming from the medieval Latin “slavus”, “slave”. Today, as if to add insult to injury, the German word for “slave”, is “sklave”, which in form is closer to the Romeian “sklavenoi”, and if nothing, exposes Germany’s complicity in this scheme of things.

In this way, the indigenous population have been injected with the false pretence that they are Slavs, originated somewhere in the Carpathians. The populace has been degraded to the status of slaves and newcomers just to satiate someone else’s hunger for power and dominance. Through these political schemes, the people of Macedonia have been robbed from their claim to their ancestral homeland and heritage, that is Macedonia herself, and that right has been transferred to our southern neighbours, who have no right whatsoever to that history and heritage.

That is why I call the “Slavs”, “people of the fantastic imagination”, because they were born from the fantasy of those  power-hungry imperialists, including the Russians, who have done a royal disservice to these people. There can only be Pelasgian, Venet, Macedonian, even Sloven, but never Slav.

 Luckily for us, sober academicians in the past knew better and is up to us from today to pick up their torch, and fight to expose the lies.

See you in another post.
